Why Does AFEX Specialize in Heavy Equipment Fire Suppression?

Heavy equipment fire suppression is not one part of a broad fire protection portfolio for AFEX. It is our specialty.

Our engineering, product development, testing, manufacturing, training, and technical support are focused on fire protection for heavy-duty mobile equipment.

That specialization gives AFEX decades of experience with the unique challenges of protecting equipment in industries such as mining, oil and gas, forestry, waste and recycling, construction, transportation, ports, agriculture, and other demanding applications.

Why it matters: Heavy equipment presents fire risks and operating conditions that are very different from those found in buildings and other fixed facilities. Your fire suppression system should be designed with those differences in mind.

SYSTEM DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

Are AFEX Fire Suppression Systems Designed Specifically for Heavy Equipment?

Yes. AFEX systems are purpose-built for heavy-duty mobile equipment.

Machines may operate for long hours while exposed to constant vibration, mechanical shock, dust, debris, moisture, temperature extremes, and harsh weather. A fire suppression system installed on that equipment must be able to withstand those same conditions.

AFEX systems are engineered around the environment in which they will actually operate.

Why it matters: A fire suppression system needs to remain ready even after thousands of hours on the machine.

What Makes the AFEX System Design Different?

AFEX fire suppression systems incorporate design features developed specifically for mobile equipment applications.

One example is our side-cartridge design. The propellant is stored separately and pressurizes the suppression agent tank when the system activates rather than keeping the agent tank continuously pressurized.

AFEX systems also use durable components and distribution networks designed for the vibration and environmental conditions found on heavy equipment.

Why it matters: System design affects reliability, durability, maintenance, and how well a fire suppression system holds up over the life of the machine.

Why Does AFEX Use Stainless Steel Distribution Tubing?

AFEX uses stainless steel tubing throughout the distribution network of its fire suppression systems.

Heavy equipment can expose suppression system components to vibration, abrasion, heat, debris, and mechanical damage. Stainless steel provides a rugged distribution network designed for those conditions.

It also reduces reliance on long runs of flexible hose in areas where movement and abrasion can create maintenance concerns.

Why it matters: The components connecting the suppression agent to the hazard need to be just as durable as the rest of the system.

Does AFEX Offer Different Types of Fire Suppression Systems?

Yes. AFEX offers multiple suppression technologies because no single solution is right for every machine or fire hazard.

AFEX solutions include:

The appropriate system depends on factors such as the equipment configuration, fuel sources, ignition hazards, operating environment, and applicable requirements.

Why it matters: AFEX can select protection based on the fire risk rather than trying to make one suppression technology fit every application.

Why Does AFEX Offer Dual Agent Fire Suppression?

Dry chemical and liquid suppression agents provide different benefits.

Dry chemical delivers fast flame knockdown and can spread throughout complex hazard areas. Liquid agent provides cooling and helps reduce the potential for reignition on hot surfaces.

AFEX dual agent systems combine both technologies when the application calls for complementary protection.

Why it matters: Complex equipment can contain multiple types of fire hazards. In some applications, using more than one suppression technology can provide a more complete approach to protection.

Is Liquid-Only Fire Suppression Better for Heavy Equipment?

Not necessarily.

Liquid agent can be highly effective for suppressing Class A and B fires, cooling hot surfaces, and helping reduce the potential for reignition. Dry chemical offers different advantages, including fast flame knockdown, broad coverage in complex hazard areas, and effectiveness on Class A, B, and C fires.

In some applications, the best approach is a combination of both technologies, known as a dual agent system.

Dual agent does not simply mean pointing two different suppression agents at the same hazard. Instead, each agent can be directed toward the areas and fire hazards it is best suited to protect. For example, dry chemical may be used where rapid flame knockdown, broad coverage, or Class C electrical fire protection are important, while liquid agent can be directed toward high-temperature areas where cooling and protection against reignition are priorities.

Why it matters: Heavy equipment can contain several different fire hazards within the same machine. Rather than assuming one suppression technology is always better, AFEX can use dry chemical, liquid agent, or a combination of both to match the protection to the specific hazards present.

What Is SAFE-X?

SAFE-X is AFEX's fluorine-free liquid fire suppression agent.

It is designed to suppress fire, cool hot surfaces, and help reduce the risk of reignition. SAFE-X is used in AFEX liquid agent, dual agent, and compact liquid fire suppression systems.

Why it matters: Cooling can be particularly important on heavy equipment where hot components may remain above the ignition temperature of nearby fuels even after visible flames have been suppressed.

TESTING & QUALITY

Are AFEX Fire Suppression Systems Independently Tested?

Yes.

AFEX invests in independent testing and third-party certification so system performance is evaluated against recognized requirements rather than relying solely on manufacturer claims.

AFEX systems hold certifications applicable to heavy-duty mobile equipment, including FM 5970:2022 and AS 5062:2022.

Why it matters: Third-party testing provides additional confidence that a fire suppression system has been evaluated for performance and the demanding conditions associated with mobile equipment.

What Is FM 5970, and Why Does It Matter?

FM 5970 is a fire suppression standard developed specifically for heavy-duty mobile equipment.

Unlike testing intended primarily for fixed fire protection applications, FM 5970 evaluates factors relevant to equipment operating in demanding environments, including fire suppression performance as well as exposure to vibration, shock, corrosion, and temperature extremes.

AFEX offers systems certified to FM 5970:2022.

Why it matters: The standard evaluates more than whether a system can extinguish a fire. It also considers whether system components can withstand the environment found on heavy equipment.

How Does AFEX Approach Quality?

A fire suppression system may remain ready on a machine for years before it is ever called upon to discharge.

That makes consistent quality essential.

AFEX designs and manufactures its fire suppression systems in the United States and maintains an ISO 9001:2015-certified Quality Management System.

Quality processes extend throughout manufacturing, inspection, testing, and system documentation.

Why it matters: A fire suppression system needs to be dependable on the day it is needed, not simply on the day it is installed.

EQUIPMENT & FIRE RISK

Does AFEX Use the Same Fire Suppression System on Every Machine?

No.

Fire risk can vary significantly depending on the machine, application, operating environment, and equipment configuration.

A mining haul truck may have different hazards than a forestry machine, frac pump, material handler, port vehicle, or compact track loader.

AFEX systems can be configured around the specific equipment and the fire hazards identified on that machine.

Why it matters: Effective fire protection begins by understanding the risk – not simply choosing a tank size.

How Does AFEX Determine What Fire Suppression System a Machine Needs?

AFEX looks at the equipment, its potential fire hazards, operating environment, and applicable requirements when determining an appropriate protection strategy.

For applications requiring a more detailed evaluation, AFEX also offers Fire Risk Assessments. These assessments consider factors such as:

  • Potential ignition sources
  • Fuel and hydraulic fluid hazards
  • High-temperature components
  • Electrical hazards
  • Seguridad del operador
  • Equipment configuration
  • Potential operational and financial impact of a fire

That information can then help guide system design and protection recommendations.

Why it matters: Fire suppression should be based on the specific risks present on the equipment.
