A fire protection plan built around a fixed facility does not always translate to a haul truck, loader, drill, or other mobile machine. Heavy equipment carries fuel, hydraulic fluid, electrical components, and hot surfaces through changing work areas. Dust, debris, vibration, weather, and long operating hours add to the challenge.
In an article for Canadian Mining Journal, AFEX’s Jeannette Miller explains why protection must start with the machine and how it is used. She covers hazards that may be out of the operator’s view, the limits of handheld extinguishers, and the role of automatic detection and suppression in supporting a safe response.
The article also looks beyond the choice of suppression agent. System design, testing for mobile equipment, service access, inspections, and operator training all matter if a system is going to remain ready in the field.
